Old Delhi, India
Getting my first facial, ever, in New Delhi, India in a dusty, dingy, dark and drab barber shop tucked in a forgotten corner of an alleyway deep in the old city of Delhi.
I walked into this barber shop to get my 40 rupee hair cut (0.85 US cents) and after my non-English speaking barber finished he pointed at the picture of a white woman getting a facial and said, "for you?"
I adamantly protested but he and the other barbers insisted I needed one (’your skin need more tight" another barber said). Again I protested, again they insisted. Finally, I relented and for the next 30 minutes had random plaster masks, gels, powders, creams and lotions lathered on my face, followed by a pretty intense facial massage and an Aravedic martial arts back and shoulder massage. Total amount I paid in the end: 170 rupees ($3.25 USD), or probably 2 days of normal wages for my barber.
Read, listen, watch, come along on my trip around-the-world on my travelogue at www.noboundaries.org.
